Looking for the Purple meeting room? Look for Lindy instead!

Heads up, this email is weirdly long for being about a meeting room, but there’s a bit more to share than meets the eye 😉.

TLDR: The next time you’re looking to book a meeting room, you might notice that the Purple Room has gone missing and is now replaced with “Lindy 2” which is located behind the big blue mural in our largest focus area (across from the Glass room).

Lindy 2 room listing in the booking portal

Purple is out, Lindy 2 is in.

If you are a regular (or occasional) user of the Purple room, know that the ONLY thing that’s changed is the location. Availability, credit rates, etc are still the same.

Why are we swapping the rooms? Well, if you’ve booked the Purple Room before, you know it’s…less-than-ideal. Lindy 2 is an improvement in pretty much every respect:

That’s 4 big upgrades in one move.

Just like Purple, Lindy 2 comfortably fits 1-3 people and is equipped with a whiteboard. The TV will move over very soon, too! Everything else stays the same in terms of booking & availability in the member portal (https://709.indyhall.org) or the Passport app.

We have a few more improvements in the works, including some things we’re waiting on our building contractors for, as well as our own improved sound treatment for echos.

In the meantime, please remember that ALL of the rooms in our space are imperfect when it comes to sound, so if your voice carries, please be mindful of folks working nearby outside the room. 🙏

As always, if you have questions or concerns that we had not considered, please let us know!

What’s with the name?

As I mentioned at the top, the room swap is one part of the story.

Lindy 2 is named after the central character in the mural adorning the walls outside of this room. This mural and character were installed by Bryce Gladfelter and his partner Calan, dear friends of Indy Hall whose mural resume now includes in order: our big rolling trash can, the Lindy mural, a mural on the front of the legendary Trocadero, and more iconic installations since.

Lindy herself is smack in the center of the mural, sporting a checkered skirt, combat boots, and a huge smile with a mixed-medium grill. You can’t miss her!

She’s upside down and floating through the mural, loudly pronouncing “JFDI” from her socks to her skin. I think Lindy represents the playful, independent vibe of our community: rebellious, whimsical, comfortable, optimistic. She’s one of one, and she’s one of us.

What about Lindy 1?

As you might have guessed, Lindy 2 is located next to Lindy 1, another room that we’ve been experimenting with.

We’ve never been a spot for private offices since the point of Indy Hall is to be around other people.

But we’ve also noticed that sometimes a member or members need a bit of privacy for a half or full day (think workshops/trainings, or heavy call days), while also wanting to be at Indy Hall to enjoy the common areas in between calls/breaks.

Getting this right is really important to us, so before rolling it out widely we’ve experimented a bit with a small team that calls Indy Hall home. That experiment has helped us calibrate the rest of our meeting rooms better, among other useful lessons learned along the way.

More on that to come.

In the near future, this room will only be bookable in half day or full day increments, with a few important caveats! But this is already a ridiculously long email about meeting rooms so…

In the meantime, shout out to Bre, David H, David R, and Ben for experimenting with us. 💛

This is a weirdly long time coming…

This upgrade has been in the works for a really long time, and it finally unlocks options for other projects and improvements around the space now that we can turn the former purple room into a much needed storage room.

I’m so thrilled that it’s finally happening.

Special shout out to one of our newest team members Nadir. After a couple of years helping us with our weekend events, Nadir has started helping out with daytime operations and for the last couple of weeks has been hard at work getting Lindy 2 ready for showtime.

Mad love to Nadir for literally taking this across the finish line.

To me and Alex, this room swap helps mark another chapter for Indy Hall, almost 2 years in the making since we officially took over these spaces from the previous tenants. Indy Hall is always a work in progress, but moments like this feel like crossing a threshold. And that feels good.

Questions? Ideas? High-fives? Hit reply, or email team@indyhall.org.

And enjoy the new spot for calls and meetings!
